Non-equilibrium dynamics in mode locking of VECSELs
Vertical external-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VECSELs) have been an active area of research lately. The frequency tunable laser can be run in multiple modes to produce either mode locked pulse or continuous wave output. Here, a quantitative numerical model for mode locking of a VECSEL is presented where one couples the microscopic dynamics, modeled by the semiconductor Bloch equations, to the pulse propagation, which is modeled by Maxwell’s equation. In this talk I will overview some of the background and modeling challenges that have been solved over the past few years.
